Personality

Adric is pretty much the definition of confident. He was always the most brilliant in his class back on Alzarius, especially when it came to mathematics. The only problem with his brilliance is that he was far too aware of it. Being constantly praised does give one a rather sizable ego, and it was no different for Adric. He has a hard time keeping himself from correcting people or rolling his eyes at others' stupidity. Of course, in his time with the Doctor, Adric's ego has mellowed. He's discovered that there are things that he doesn't know and that he has quite a bit to learn in the large scheme of things. Not to mention, he was still quite a clumsy little oaf. He had to get a grip on that before he could really be helpful.

After the regeneration of the fourth Doctor, who Adric considered as quite a bit of a mentor, into the fifth Doctor, Adric felt as though he couldn't do anything to impress the Doctor anymore. If anything, he only seemed to get in the way. He'd craved the fourth Doctor's approval and got it quite often, and while the craving hadn't changed, the amount of it he was receiving had dropped significantly. If anything, his desperation to impress to Doctor added to him being that much more unsure of the abilities that he possesses. He's still arrogant, for sure, but now, he'll often follow up any sort of assertion of his intelligence with questions to verify that he's correct.

History

Adric grew up on Alzarius, spending his youth in the wreckage of the Starliner learning from his elders and spending time with his brother, Varsh. It was around his fifteenth year of age that Varsh rebelled against the order that was held within the Starliner. Adric wished to go with his brother, but he was worried about leaving the colony. His education there was going well, and Adric rarely did anything without questioning it. Questioning was pretty much the core of Adric's existence. It was impossible for him not to wonder about the world around him, and "Why?" has always been his favorite word. Of course, his inquisitive ways had often got on his much more practical brother's nerves. To Varsh, he was just a kid, after all.

However, when Mistfall was called for the obedient members of the Starliner society, Adric took that as an opportunity to steal food for the Outlers and hopefully prove himself to his brother in the process. However, he was caught by one of the heads of the society, the First Decider Draith who had considered Adric his protege. Adric was able to get away, though, when Draith was swallowed by waves created by some strange force without the river. His last words "Tell Dexeter we've come full circle," puzzled Adric. That was, until he met the Doctor.

The Doctor, then in his fourth incarnation, along with Romana took him into the TARDIS when he needed help recovering from a leg injury he had suffered during the chase. They provided him and the Outlers with the safety they needed from the Mistfall as well as from the colonist society. While the Doctor helped the Outlers and the Colonists to finally leave Alzarius, his brother, Varsh, was killed in the retreat while protecting the Doctor and Romana. With nothing to keep him with the colonists, since Varsh was the last family he had remaining, Adric stowed away in the TARDIS with the Doctor and Romana having no idea he was there.

Adric spent the next couple of years traveling with the Doctor. He was even with him when he fell from a tower while working to foil one of the Master's plans and regenerated into his fifth incarnation. Adric had looked up to the Forth Doctor, turning to him for validation and acceptance after having lost his older brother. He saw him as a father figure, but with the Fifth Doctor, it was constantly like fighting an uphill battle. He could never seem to do anything right for him at all, no matter how hard her tried. He could control the TARDIS almost as well as the Doctor. He could help him with calculations and adjustments that he had to make. He was willing to stick out his neck in order to protect the Doctor, Tegan, and Nyssa, but it never seemed to be enough. In fact, his desire to prove himself to the Doctor is what ended up getting him in this position.

Trapped on a cargo ship full of Cybermen that was about to crash into Earth, Adric figured that if he could complete the algorithm that was required to prevent the crash that he would really be able to prove himself worthy. He was only one number around (a 1 or a 2) when the Doctor INSISTED that they had to go. Having a stroke of genius the second they stepped into the lift to leave, Adric leapt out as the doors closed behind him in order to input the final number. It was a one, he was sure of it. Sadly, one of the still slightly functioning Cybermen destroyed the control panel before he could input the number. Lamenting that now he would never know that he was right, Adric watched as the ground grew closer and closer on the view screen. Just before he was about to crash, he felt a strange sensation pass over him...and ended up falling the last few feet onto a rather solid roadway outside some sort of modern museum or monument...perfectly alive.

Arrival

As the craft that he was in approached its impact with the ground, it passed through what is now known as the Cardiff Rift. The Rift drew him out of the ship, intentionally or unintentionally saving his life, before dropping him almost directly outside of the Torchwood Three homebase.

Relationships

Torchwood

Gwen Cooper

TBA

Captain Jack Harkness

Adric respects Jack as both an individual and as a leader. He doubts he could actually show how much he appreciates being given the chance to prove himself. Adric, however, feels slightly redundant sometimes because of Tosh's presence, and he fears that any reason that Jack ends up finding to get rid of him, he will. Because of this, he's made every effort to be as honest as he can with Jack.

Owen Harper

TBA

Ianto Jones

Ianto was the first person that Adric met upon his arrival in this time, the reason that Adric is working for Torchwood, and practically the only person that Adric has actually had constant conversations with. Adric is definitely on friendly terms with him. And as much as Adric might tease him for it, he really does appreciate the concern that Ianto's been showing him.

Martha Jones

TBA

Alice Keyes

Adric can't deny that he's fond of Alice. She intrigues him since he has never met a human woman who seems as knowledgeable and capable. The fact that they get along well makes her just that much more interesting. Even if her insistence that she called him 'Short Stuff' is grating.

Toshiko Sato

Adric hasn't really had the opportunity to get to know her very well.

Rose Tyler

From the little that Adric has seen, she seems extremely flighty and irresponsible. The Doctor likes her, but Adric honestly can't understand how. Rose is worse than Tegan (Adric is ignoring the fact that he'd developed a very high opinion of Tegan by the time he was thrown here), and Adric knows the Doctor barely tolerated her. Adric is trying to withhold judgment until he has more experience with her, but it's so very difficult.

Other

The Doctor (Ten)

Adric's relationship with the Doctor has been a very long and complicated one. Fascinated by his intelligence, Adric initially looked up to him as a mentor, someone that he could relay on him to teach him more about the universe than he ever learned over the Starliner. After his regeneration from 4th Doctor into 5th Doctor, their relationship seemed waver between sibling-like and father/son-like depending upon the respective maturities of the two of them within a given situation.

Adric is still getting used to this incarnation. Adric is amused by the fact that it seems as the Doctor's aged, he's just gotten more and more immature. Adric finds him as utterly frustrating and infuriating as ever. This isn't to say that Adric doesn't respect him. He does, quite a bit. But he knows that the Doctor isn't perfect.

The Master

The Master is absolutely insane. Nobody can deny that. Adric has faced that first hand, and Adric loathes that Master for how much he's abused that people that Adric cares about. However, Adric has an odd amount of respect for his intelligence. Adric won't deny that the Master is utterly brilliant. If only he'd put his intelligence to better use.

Romana

Adric was always fond of Romana from the very moment that he stumbled across the pair in the forests of Alzarius. When he was traveling with them, she was like a big sister to him, teaching him what she could, teasing him whenever the opportunity arose, and doing her best to make him feel welcome when the Doctor's hospitality was...lacking.

Now, with her having grown quite a bit and him having stayed practically the same, she seems to have taken up a more motherly role in his life. It's slightly embarrassing, but even he can't deny that he really does enjoy being looked after like she's been doing. And above all, he's just happy she's alive. That's better than anything else.

Soundtrack

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow (Hey Oh)

Went to descend to amend for a friend

All the channels that had broken down.

Now you bring it up, I'm gonna ring it up

- just to hear you sing it out.

Step from the road to the sea to the sky,

And I do believe what we rely on,

When I lay it on, come get to play it on

All my life to sacrifice.

Staind - How About You?

Everyone plays the hand they're dealt

And learns to walk through life themselves

Not everything in life is handed on a plate

When people think your words are true

It doesn't matter what you do

I sold my soul to get here

How 'bout you?

Limp Bizkit - Behind Blue Eyes

No one bites back as hard

On their anger

None of my pain and woe

Can show through

Linkin Park - Faint

I am, a little bit insecure, a little unconfident

Cuz you don't understand I do what I can

Sometimes I don't make sense

I am, what you never wanna say, but I've never had a doubt

It's like no matter what I do I can't convince you for once just to hear me out

So I, let go watching you turn your back like you always do

You face away and pretend that I'm not

But I'll be here cause you're all that I've got

Johnny Cash - Hurt

Beneath the stains of time

The feelings disappear

You are someone else

I am still right here

What have I become?

My sweetest friend

Everyone I know

Goes away in the end

Jack Johnson - Upside Down

Who's to say

What's impossible

Well they forgot

This world keeps spinning

And with each new day

I can feel a change in everything

And as the surface breaks reflections fade

But in some ways they remain the same

And as my mind begins to spread its wings

There's no stopping curiosity
