Personal History
Annie Cartwright was born in 1945 and grew up with many of the values of the 1950's. Born just at the end of the WWII Annie has always joked she was conceived the day her Father returned home. All though her young life Annie's family was loving and supportive encouraging her to try new things which she did frequently. She took a great liking to reading mystery stories and play spy games with her older brother. They grew up in relative middle class comfort. Her father worked as a milk man upon his return from France where he was stationed. Annie's mother had taken a job helping with the book keeping at the local store where she continued to work part time. They did normal family things like fight about eating vegetables at dinner and when they should get their first TV as well as how much time they should spend watching it; All in all a normal childhood.
When the opportunity for University came around Annie jumped at the chance. With the support of her Parents Annie became a professional student for four years earning her degree in Psychology. While in University she did normal things like date and study with friends. She hit a few pubs and broke a few heels making her way home. Romantically Annie dated a good bit in school but settled with a boy named Neil who she was in several classes with. He was smart and wanted to become a practicing Psychologist after more schooling.
After finishing her degree Annie attempted to look for work. As it turned out the seemingly equal world of University was a big sham. It was a huge wake-up call when the only work she could find was as a bar maid. Annie worked two years in the job putting up with the unwelcome touches and rude comments. The only joy she had with the job seemed to be when Neil would come to walk her home each night. Each night soon became a few nights a week and then none. The two ended their relationship on good terms and did their best to stay in touch. A bright light of the employment kind came along in a posting for a WPC position in the newspaper. Annie inquired and was quickly accepted, it turned out her degree in Psychology did a lot to boost her application. After a good bit of training Annie found herself working with the Manchester Police.
It was 1968 and things were looking up. With her steady job Annie was able to get a small but nice apartment on her own. Sure there were the comments of the male officers to deal with but they were nothing compared to the drunken fools she had to deal with as a bar maid. She learned to take the lumps of sexism standing tall though sometimes they did force her to grit her teeth and hold her tongue for fear of losing her position. 1973 was when it all changed. A new DI joined the CID team and he really caught Annie's attention. Aside from being an odd kind of handsome he was respectful of her and even a little sweet. He did however say some crazy things about being in a coma and the world being in his imagination. It was pretty easy to write off as trauma from his accident he was in the day he arrived. Really what other reason would there be for wanting to off yourself after closing your first case in a new job? Brain trauma was the only logical choice. Things moved a long with DI Tyler or Sam as she called him being on a first name basis. They had their flirtations and he was even kind enough to recommend her for promotion to WDC. She was the first woman to earn a desk in CID and she was so thankful for it.
As it turned out, the man she knew as Sam Tyler was suffering more than she knew from the brain trauma. After an awful experience in a botched sting along with the rest of the main CID team, they were able to get Sam some help. After speaking with many Doctors the problem seemed to fade away, all the talk of being from the future in 2006, being an under cover Sam Williams, it was as if it had faded from their lives. With the craziness gone it seemed like the right time to finally give it a romantic go with Sam. He was a bit older sure but she had never met a guy as progress as him before, how could she pass on a catch like him?
Personality
Annie is what most people would call a sweetheart. She has a smile on her face more often than not and even when life isn't putting a real on on her face she'll slap one on for the benefit of everyone else. This is how others see her, the happy girl the one with a bright future who is so innocent and nice... they're right on some of it yes but a person can't be puppies and rainbows all the time.
Annie is a happy person yes, but it's because she chooses to be so. The rampant sexism she has encountered all her adult life is about enough to make a girl want to hurt someone. Lucky for them all those years of being told women are physically is something she has been pushed into believing. Sure she could stand up for herself but what would the point be? They would only call her names and tease her about a lack of male genitals. She takes the sexism in stride doing her best to pick her battles, being sure the ones she fights she knows she can win.
The happiness Annie exudes is balances by being so bright, it's hard to put up with a happy person but when they're actually productive it's a lot easier. In addition to being quick herself she is also an ace at helping people put their own thoughts in order as well as general organization. As awful of a cliché as it is she is really great at filing.
Internally Annie keeps most of her feelings hidden, she can be a bit of a flirt letting people know she likes them but most social interactions are kept polite and general. When she has an opinion on something she does what she can to voice it sometimes even giving it to others to voice allowing them to take her credit. Once she has friendship from people she is a little more open about things voicing frustrations and feelings more openly.
Arrival
While visiting her Brother in Cardiff on holiday she came down to the docks to see what he did for a living. She saw what looked like a child in the water and dive in clothes and all to attempt a rescue. She hit her head on a rock at the bottom and when she resurfaced it was 2007 and she was no longer at the dock but washed up in front of the Millennium Center. As far as anyone can tell Annie came through the rift, however she has her own theories she is keen to investigate dealing with alternate realities and looking up if a certain Sam Tyler was right about being from the future.
Game History
Arrived through the rift and met Lucy Saxon (introduced herself as Lucy Smith) who explained the rift and got her set up in a Modern Cardiff hotel she now calls home.
Has an unexpected shared lunch with Claude where she insists she has tramatic memory loss rather than have fallen through the rift.
