Crowley

Page history last edited by PBworks 4 years, 6 months ago

Name: Crowley

AKA: Anthony J. Crowley, Crawley (formerly)

Fandom: Good Omens, by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

Race: Demon (formerly, angel)

'Birth' place: The Silver City, Heaven

Age: Dunno. Time wasn't invented yet.

Occupation: blessedly unemployed for the moment. Normally, Hell's top field agent.

Brief history: In the Beginning, God created Heaven. It was a bit longer before Earth was actually created, and though the Bible states that it happened over the course of a few days, it should be kept in mind that the sun wasn't created until the forth day. So those first few days were something of an estimate. During that period (this was before Time, in its current understanding), the angels were created, they created the world for their maker, and then the first among them rebelled, and he and his followers (roughly one-third the population) were cast out.

And so Hell was created. Those inhabiting it shed their angelic names and titles, and were called demons instead. And when the Earth was completed, and the demons looked upon the newly created humans with fear and wonder, one among them was selected to "get up there and make some trouble." At the time, he was called Crawley, and he was given the body of a snake with which to make his trouble. After meeting a rather unusual angel named Aziraphale, who guarded the eastern gate of Eden, Crawley slithered his way to the Tree of Knowledge and to the ear of Eve. The rest can be found in the Bible, under Genesis. Given his success, Crawley was given position as Hell's field agent. Thrilled that he didn't have to return to the bleariness of Hell, he started to wander, finding little patches of human civilization and mucking things up with joyful determination.

It was a few centuries later that he recieved an upgrade to a new body, and changed his name to Crowley. Over the centuries, he got to be quite familiar with Aziraphale. The two would be amiable for a few years, then take to an all-out brawl that would leave them hurting for years, even decades, before starting the cycle over again. It was shortly after BC rolled into AD that they (mostly Aziraphale) had come up with the Arrangement. The two stopped interfering with one another's work, and altered each other if "something big" was coming, giving the other time to thwart. The Arrangement worked so well that each was able to relax, get their work done, and even take some time off here and there.

In the late years of the 20th century, Crowley was given an unhappy surprise - the Antichrist was to be delivered unto Earth, via him. After dropping off the infant to the hospital, Crowley called Aziraphale. Together, the pair hatched out a plan to thwart the coming Apocalypse. Though events didn't unravel quite as smoothly as Crowley could have hoped, the end of days was still averted, much to the dismay of Above and Below. Since that time, Crowley has kept himself low-key, making every effort to stay off Hell's radars and away from the occasional Duke of Hell sent to 'check in' on him. He decided to take a holiday in Cardiff, as the local Rift puts a mild damper on metaphysical arts. It creates a kind of divine/abyssal 'blind spot', providing Crowley with cover -- provided he doesn't alert anyone by spreading out his infulence too far.

Powers and Abilities: As a demon, Crowley has the natural ability to affect the world around him. He can manipulate reality as he sees fit, and alter things to his satisfaction. He can't directly influence free will, but he can certainly tempt humans into doing things they normally wouldn't consider. He's also very good at it. Crowley can see in the dark, he is immune to heat and fire, and he has near-total control over his own body. He can make himself sober by removing alcohol from his bloodstream, he can heal damage to his body (with some effort), and he can change his physical appearance at will (though his vanity rarely lends himself to do so). The only exception is his eyes, which remain reptillian - yellow, with slitted pupils - no matter what his exterior resembles. For this reason, Crowley is almost always wearing dark sunglasses, even at night.

(For a full list of powers used in the novel, look here.)

Limitations: The limited access with Below has placed a bit of a cap on Crowley's abilities. Not only that, but he has a self-imposed limit of how much power to utilize. He wants to stay off radar, and employing to much of his abilities would make him stick out like a fat man at a nudist beach. Metaphysically speaking.

Game History: None, as of yet

Game Canon: (things which may or may not be true by the source material, but are true for game purposes)

  • As an angel, his name was Kanaphiel
  • Crowley has a hobby with botony. He read somewhere that plans are more healthy when you speak to them. So Crowley did, on what he considered a practical level. And when one failed to thrive to his satisfaction, Crowley would pick up the doomed plant, and show it to all the others, saying "This is what happens when you can't cut it." Then he would leave the flat and show up several hours later with an empty flowerpot, which would lie in plain view of the others as a silent warning. As a result, Crowley's houseplants are the most full and beautiful plants one could hope to find in the whole of the United Kingdom. Also the most terrified.
  • Has a tendency to hiss when he forgets himself.
  • Crowley is far more impressed with humans than he likes to admit. He likes the buggers, and more often than not will leave an individual feeling better as opposed to worse about their state of affairs. The less specific things are, the less guilty Crowley feels, and thus the more 'demonic' he can be.
  • Crowley has been officially credited for the following demonic works: the fall of Eden, value-added tax, the Spanish Inquisition, Welsh-language television, Manchester, Glasgow, the M25 highway.
  • Despite being a Demon and not actually requiring it, Crowley is very fond of sleeping. He enjoys it so much that he slept through the entire of the 19th century, although he did have to get up in 1892 to use the bathroom.
  • Can do incredible things with his tongue.
  • Any cassette Crowley has in his car turns into a "Best of Queen" cassette in a fortnight, leading to any cassette regardless of artist to have Freddie Mercury perform his songs.
  • Crowley served as a Captain for the British Army during World War I, fighting in France. His official orders from Below were to move through the ranks, swaying soldiers to renounce God before they died. In the end, Crowley ended up serving with one company the whole time, and decided that Hell couldn't have them, ensuring that the majority of his men made it home alive.
  • Crowley was present at the Crucifixion, a fact which he has tried very, very hard to forget.
  • Hates when his hair is dirty or muddy.

Associations:

Aziraphale - Crowley has known Aziraphale for more than six thousand years. The two often meet up to compare notes, much like Cold War agents who find they have more in common with their immediate opponents than their distant superiors. Their friendship is far closer than either of them seem to care to admit, but Crowley trusts Aziraphale far more than any other being in Heaven, Hell, or Earth.

Crowley is the intellectual property of N. Gaiman and T. Pratchett. This interpretation is also inspired by the fictions of Daegaer.

Personal Soundtrack

Audioslave - Heaven's Dead

Anchor the night, open the sky

Hide in the hours before sunrise

Pray for me not, I won't lose sight

Of where I belong and where you lie

Voltaire - When You're Evil

And it's so easy when you're evil

This is the life, you see

The Devil tips his hat to me

I do it all because I'm evil

And I do it all for free

Your tears are all the pay I'll ever need

Foo Fighters - The Pretender

I'm the voice inside your head

You refuse to hear

I'm the face that you have to face

Mirrored in your stare

I'm what's left, I'm what's right

I'm the enemy

I'm the hand that will take you down

Bring you to your knees

Voltaire - Almost Human

What did i ever do to you

that you should treat me this way?

is it really such a crime

for an angel to speak his mind?

in time i'll try to shed some light

if i were a big boy i wouldn't cry

but since i'm not a big boy i'll have to cry

Fastball - The Way

Anyone could see

The road that they walk on is paved in gold

And it's always summer, they'll never get cold

They'll never get hungry

They'll never get old and gray

You can see their shadows

Wandering off somewhere

They won't make it home

But they really don't care
