FAQ

Page history last edited by Evangeline 4 years, 2 months ago

This is a HIGH ACTIVITY group, averaging three-five threads/twenty posts a day or more (check [info]tw3status if you want to know who's where). If this is too active for you, you may want to reconsider membership.

Weevils. Main characteristics: Humanoid, low-level intelligence, possibly telepathic. Very, very cranky.

List of Torchwood monsters and aliens.

List of Doctor Who monsters and aliens.

Please glance at those before including specific aliens/monsters in your threads. If you describe Daleks as giant birds or little green men, we're all going to laugh at you.

What if I don't know much about Torchwood/Doctor Who?

We're not requiring you to be an expert on the show, but you might want to start here. As for Doctor Who...oi. Start here and here if you just want the basics. You can probably get by without them if you really have to.

What's canon/what's allowed/where in the canon does this game take place?

This game takes place AFTER Doctor Who 3x13/Torchwood 1x13 and BEFORE Doctor Who S4 and Torchwood S2. Everything up to that point is CANON. (I have a feeling this will somehow be impossible, but we'll work with it.) However, this is the Whoniverse--if you can find a reason/way to un-kill someone/bring someone back from an alternate universe/whatever, go for it. It's Torchwood, after all. It's not like they're not used to it. )

What if I want to bring in a character from another show/book/movie?

All you need is a reason why they would be at Torchwood/would have fallen through the Rift. For example, you could say that Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was working on a spell that went wrong, and ended up in an alternate universe. Or Fargo from Eureka was transferred to Torchwood 3 for whatever reason. Use your imagination.

What if someone's already taken the character I wanted to play?

...find another character to play? There are a few exceptions. For example, we've got The Tenth Doctor, but there's also John Smith from Human Nature/Family of Blood (Season 3). There's The Master, and there's Harry Saxon. If you can come up with a good reason to allow an alter!version of a currently-played character, we'll allow it.

How many characters am I allowed to have?

As many as you can handle. Of course, if you have ten and obviously can't manage them all, then you might want to think about dropping a few. If you already have one or more inactive characters and apply with a new one, you will probably be told to either make your current characters more active or drop a few before we consider letting you bring in another one.

How many characters am I allowed from each fandom?

Let's say...two? If you had four characters, you could have (hypothetically) two from Buffy, and two from Torchwood, but not three from Torchwood and one from Buffy. Doctor Who and Torchwood will count as separate fandoms. However, Classic Who has been on for over thirty years, with dozens of companions. For that show, we're willing to make an exception--if you want to play more than two characters from Classic Who, that's fine.

Are original characters allowed?

Ohhhh, fine. But if they're Mary Sues, I'll cut you with a butter knife. NO. NO. NO MORE. I am tired of the Mary Sues who can do everything better than everyone else and have sooperspecial abilities and/or supernatural powers and try too hard to be cutesyfunnyquirky/be better than everyone that ever lived/be part of everything, even if the situation doesn't call for it/hook up with the first cute boy they see and just NO. THEY'RE NOT ALLOWED ANYMORE.

Does my journal have to contain my character's name?

If you want to apply with [info]aka_badwolf instead of [info]rosetyler, that's fine. As long as it applies to your character in some way, shape or form. Make sure your journal name is somewhat logical. If you're applying as Rose Tyler, and your journal name is rstlr, we're going to ask you to go back and get one that doesn't look like someone mashed a bunch of keys together. rose__tyler would be better. tylerxrose would be better. aka_badwolf would be better. Anything would be better, really.

What's the update limit?

You can update in your character journals (private messages to various characters, private journal entries, voicemails, whatever). Any scenes go in [info]tw3; just make sure to add the necessary info in the subject line. For instance, if it's a scene started by Martha for Ianto, just put "OT: Ianto" in the subject line or somewhere at the top of your post. If it's open to anyone, just put OTA (open to all) instead. If there's been no sign of activity from you in...oh, let's say three weeks? No scene-replying, no posts, nothing, you're eligible for override and can be removed.
When you join, you have two weeks to either participate in a thread or post/comment in a thread--not just joining and dying off, not just posting a thread and ignoring it but actual interaction.  After that you must show some sign of activity every three weeks (or every day if you want, we're all about activity) or you're eligible for removal.  Once a month we have roll call; you have one week to reply to those posts or any character at/near three weeks or one that is consistently inactive (only posting to escape removal) will be removed.

Do I have to rate my threads?

If they're going to be above PG-13, we'd appreciate a rating in the subject line somewhere.

Are multiple threads allowed?

The trouble with threading is that if you only do one at a time, you're pretty much confined to that one thread until it's done. Which means that if someone starts up new threads, you don't get a chance to jump in and be part of them. So if you feel that you can handle multiple threads, go for it! Just remember that sometimes if you're involved in two or more threads at a time, the events in one thread might end up contradicting the other. It happens

What if I want to read threads by a specific character?

All thread posts with the character's names, to make it easier to search/catch up if you're new to the game. If we build up enough of our own canon, there'll be a post complied of all major threads and bits of in-game canon that differ from show canon.

Do I need a biography for my character?

You don't need one, but it would be nice if you had one. Just a basic history of your character, for those of us who might not know who/what they are. Maybe a bit about why they're here, what they're up to, the usual. You're big boys and girls, I'm sure you can come up with something! That's half of what the wiki's for!

When are adds?

I'll try to do them after every application. So if you've posted an app, you'll probably hear back within 24 hours. They're done as quickly as possible, but I post a link to the application to the OOC community (with screened comments), to let the members have a chance to look over the application--after all, it's their community too, and if it's a character from their fandom, they have a right to look over the application as well, see how well the two characters would mesh or contact the player about storylines. Hopefully, this will still keep us under the 24 hour rule.

Where do I introduce myself/do I have to start a thread or make an intro post?

It's not required, if you'd rather just start a thread or post a memo to someone or whatever (just glance through the friendslist, we're doing all kinds of things), but if you want to, feel free to say hello in [info]tw3ooc. If you see more than one or two threads (that are open to everyone) without any comments, please just jump into one of those instead of starting one of your own. There's no point in having multiple threads open to everyone when some of those people could just be interacting in threads that have been sitting around for awhile. I'd say we don't bite, but this is Torchwood--of course we do.

Can I play deceased characters?

Yes, but there's one rule: they have to be actually alive when they show up in Cardiff. For example, if you want to play Tara from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it's okay to play her circa season 4 or 5 or 6 (whichever you prefer), but if you want to play her circa season 7, then...she's been dead for awhile. No ghosts floating around Torchwood unless they're canon, please. (That means Harry Dresden's uncle Bob-the-ghost would be allowed; dead!Tara from Buffy would not be allowed.)

Can I play AU versions of existing characters?

Yes, as long as you give us some backstory/a reason why they're AU.  If you just say "This is a different version of Rose Tyler because she has brown hair insted of blond", that's not good enough.  If you say "This Rose is from a universe that never had a Doctor, and gets pulled through the Rift to this universe", that's better.

What year is it?

Ianto's writer, who swears up and down that they are not really Ianto, has put together a very sketchy timeline.  The short answer, however, is that  "It's all the fault of the BBC Props Department.  That's our story and we're sticking to it. Until we see a need to "forget" that we said that.

What should I know about the geography/hub/game-canon?

Every person's character biography generally contains a list of facts that are canon for the game (but might not be canon in the character's source).  Cardiff itself is being kept "structurally sound."  We're not moving buildings and locations around to suit our purposes.  There is a general reference page for everything else.
