Background

Ianto Jones was born in the south of Wales. He comes from a traditionally Welsh-speaking family and attended an all-Welsh-language primary school¹. He attended University in London and is at least bilingual (it is suspected though not yet confirmed that he's fluent in several other languages²).

Ianto Jones had been working for Torchwood One prior to The Battle of Canary Wharf. After Torchwood One was destroyed, he was reassigned to Torchwood Three, in Cardiff.

Personality

Ianto does have a sense of humour, albeit a very dry one. It's sometimes difficult to tell if he's joking or not. He has a low tolerance for disorder and often steps in to help out when everyone seems to flounder. Generally, he comes across as shy and passive and has been known to hesitate before taking action, but recent events have caused him to show a more aggressive/dominant side, suggesting there's a lot more to him than just a nicely pressed suit and exceptional coffee.

Ianto never admits how much he knows about anything.

• Despite being back "home," he has made no effort to contact his family. It is entirely possible they believe he died at Canary Wharf (although his name is not listed among the dead) or that he has no family (common speculations)
  • Ianto's mother died when he was young (currently, only Jack and Tosh know this)
• Ianto is twenty-four and has worked for Torchwood since he was eighteen (common knowledge)
• Prefers The Rolling Stones to The Beatles (common knowledge)
  • Thinks Jack is just slightly weird for preferring The Beatles
• Favourite film is Wild Strawberries (common knowledge)
• First name is actually Ieuan (unknown to everyone)
• Jones is his mother's maiden name (unknown to everyone; Jack only knows Ianto's father's last name was not Jones)
• Fluent in Russian, Italian, Arabic, and Chinese (in addition to English and Welsh) (currently, Jack is the only one who knows this)
  • Because he can read Chinese, he can read most Japanese
