Biography

Indira was born on the 14th of January, 1973, the youngest of three girls. Her mother had promised her father that he could name this baby, so he was terribly disappointed that she wasn't a boy he could name Indiana. 'Indira' was the next best thing, apparently, and her name certainly stands out when compared to her older sisters, Elizabeth and Anne. Other than her name, Indira was a fairly normal child; she had the usual childhood illnesses, and a bout of appendicitis at the age of eleven.

Indira entered medical school in 1992. She had always been a conscientious student, and medical school was no different; she hovered near the top of her class through focus and dedication, never quite making it to the top where the truly brilliant students were. Indira was always content to be 'quite good'; she knows she's not perfect, and she frankly thinks the stress of being perfect would be far too much for her.

She was recruited by Torchwood in 2001, a year after completing her medical degree, to act as a consultant and to treat the invariable injuries that came from handling alien technology. She worked alongside several other doctors and scientists, including the woman she would eventually fall in love with, Melinda Scott.

When the Cybermen invaded in 2006, Indira's department was one of the last to be taken for conversion; Melinda was one of the first of the department to be converted. While Indira wasn't converted, she did sustain fairly heavy injuries during the battle, and once things had settled down, she received extended medical leave, with the understanding that when she'd completed her physical therapy, she'd either return to work or report for Retconning.

• She got together with her first boyfriend, Damien Lewis, when they were in the high school musical together in tenth grade. It amused her later when he turned out to be gay and she realised she was bisexual; in retrospect, the fact that he only kissed her when she was in costume as a part of the male chorus should have tipped her off.
• She has broken her right arm twice; once when she was seven and fell off the monkey bars, and once when she was thirteen and tripped going down the stairs.
• She really does trip going down stairs. And up stairs.
• She's slightly myopic - she needs glasses to read, and sometimes wears them during everyday life, but she can get by without them unless she has to read something in smallish print.
• She has two pet cats, a Bengal tom named Inigo and a Burmese queen named Buttercup.
