Personality

Seamus is a brilliant engineer and AI expert, marvelous with technology yet undiscovered on Earth. He's the ultimate fix-it man, able to repair almost anything with almost anything. At least, that's what he'll say if you ask him about what he does. Seamus is nothing if not arrogant and egocentric. His tumultuous upbringing has left him with somewhat deficient social skills, and he spends more of his time interacting with machines than he does other people. Despite these typically anti-social tendencies, anyone that is actually able to make a dent in Seamus's reality becomes a friend for life. He may express his feelings in sarcastic quips, dismissive banter, and awkward half admissions, but that doesn't neglect how strongly he cares about those that he considers friends.

History

Born on Earth in a little village in upstate Massachusetts-Dunwich late in the year 283 AFC (5141 CE), Seamus Zelazny Harper spent the first few years of his life hiding from Magog raiding parties that loved to frequent the unprotected villages around the boarders of the cities. Outside the protection of the Nietzschean authority, these families were practically begging to become cattle for the humanoid devouring Magog. After the loss of two of his cousins (who his family were forced to kill themselves after they were used as incubators for Magog eggs), the rest of his family concluded that it was better to be under Nietzschean rule than it was to risk the chance of becoming play things or food for monsters.

They moved back to Boston proper, near the harbor, where they lived underneath the "protections" of the local Nietzschean garrison. Boston harbor had long since ceased in being a productive shipping yard. If anything anymore, it was a scrap heap for all of the bits and bobbles that no one wanted anymore. Starting at a very young age, Harper made a hobby of scavenging discarded bits of tech from the harbor as well as the dumping grounds behind the garrison and working on repairing and improving them. While actions such as these equated to theft, for which the punishment was execution, Seamus was very lucky that he was swift and cunning enough in his youth to never get caught.

After his parents' death, he had to find some way of keeping himself from becoming the next victim of the Nietzschean paranoia and brutality. Some of the local protection groups, however, saw enough potential in him to keep him on as a handyman and errand boy. It wasn't until Beka Valentine happened across him in the process of one of his side projects, was impressed by his work, and offered him the position of chief engineer aboard her ship, the Eureka Maru.

Aboard the Maru, Harper found his niche in the engine rooms. He'd never seen anything so beautiful in all of his life. All of that machinery, that power and technology in one room and all of it at his disposal.... It was impossible for a guy not to end up on a power trip. He knew he was good at what he did, but until the Maru, he didn't have any scope of just how good he was. Seamus spent most of his time in the engine rooms. It wasn't just because he was obsessed with their capabilities, but it was partly because he wanted to avoid a certain member of the crew. They had a Magog on board. As much as Beka insisted that he was perfectly harmless, Harper was skeptical. There was no such thing as a harmless Magog.

Despite his reluctance to interact with the Magog named Bem, Seamus did develop a friendly relationship with Trance Gemini, the ship's doctor and life support systems officer. Trance was a mystery to everyone on the ship, but what they didn't know about her didn't outweigh what they did, not even in Harper's paranoid mind. Trance was optimistic, friendly, naive, and forgiving, everything that Seamus wasn't. It was probably why he was so intrigued by her. Well, that and the tail.

After awhile, they all started to come together as a crew, running missions, picking up abandoned salvage, making thrones like any respectable crew. It wasn't until their encounter with the Andromeda Ascendant that the crew of the salvage ship the Eureka Maru even started on the path that would lead them to their destinies. Traveling with Dylan Hunt, a Commonwealth Captain who had been trapped in time for 300 years, in order to try and restore the Commonwealth to the Known Worlds, Seamus Harper saw and experienced things that he'd rather not remember, too many things to list properly, for anyone to understand the breadth and depth of them unless they'd been there themselves. The destruction of his home world, Earth, and the final elimination of the Abyss were more than enough for Harper emotionally and psychologically.

A few days off, away from Andromeda and everyone else just keeping to himself and recovering, was what that he thought that he needed after the conclusion of the war against the Abyss. However, before he even got a chance to get anywhere on the planet, he was taken, a sharp yank as though he'd been pulled unwillingly into slipstream, and dropped into the middle of an unfamiliar city.

Arrival

Fell through the Rift; After watching the Earth, his home planet, explode into a million molten pieces, powering his way through a Nietzschean battle fleet, and reuniting Tarn-Vedra with the Known Worlds, Seamus had gone to pack his bags for a few days of off time on Tarn-Vedra. With all of his vital equipment, luxuries, and several changes of clothing packed in a travel bag, Seamus stepped out onto the surface of Tarn-Vedra with only one thought in mind. It certainly wasn't Earth. It wasn't his home.

He certainly didn't expect that the next few steps that he took would end him up on a planet that he'd seen destroyed just a few hours before. And it was certainly not the Earth that he remembered.

Relationships

Torchwood

Jack Harkness

Seamus is actually rather fond of Jack. There's something about him that reminds him of Dylan but a lot more flamboyant and jocular. He seems like one of those guys that it's pretty much impossible to hate. Seamus envies those guys.

Owen Harper

Owen might be a prat, but Seamus thinks he's not really so bad when he isn't being baited. Seamus knows that he isn't going to be able to be on his best behavior all the time, but maybe it won't matter by the time he is unable to restrain his inner ass.

Ianto Jones

Formal. Too formal. Like an overstarched shirt.

Other

Crowley

TBA

Alice Keyes

Seamus feels a kindred spirit with Alice, the hearts of two techie geeks united for a better cause. It's really ashame that she, like all the other brilliant women who didn't want to kill him, just considers him a friend.

Family

The Harpers of Boston

Declan Harper

Twin of Shavan; Two years older than Seamus

Declan was another of the Harper family geniuses. Hyperactive and always eager to get his hands on something new, Declan was the driving force behind the early adventures that he, Seamus, and Siobhan used to have hiding from the Nietzscheans and picking through their discarded parts.

He was also always the test man. Whenever they had a project that they were working on, Declan was always the first to try it out. He used to insist that not only was the the most brilliant and would know best what to do if something went wrong, he was also the hardiest and most likely to survive any sort of explosive malfunction. Which was true, for the most part.

Declan was captured by a Magog swarm when he was 15 along with Siobhan. Both were infested with Magog eggs and were reluctantly killed by Seamus's father in order to prevent the larve from hatching and killing them all.

Siobhan Harper

Twin of Declan; Two years older than Seamus

Siobhan was another of the Harper family geniuses. A lot more subdued than his twin brother, he took the time to think things over before acting. He was usually the one that directed their raids on the Nietzschean dumping grounds, orchestrating it so that they would have more chance to get away and less chance of getting caught.

He was the one that always played devil's advocate to Seamus's ideas, challenging and testing every little theory and estimate until they were refined enough to work. Seamus and Siobhan ended up in quite a few fist fights over the years because of comments and criticisms that Siobhan would make about Seamus's way of thinking that would be a little too cruel. "Creative geniuses, always the touchie types," was always what Siobhan would say to laugh off any conflict that would arise between them.

Siobhan was captured by a Magog swarm when he was 15 along with Declan. Both were infested with Magog eggs and were reluctantly killed by Seamus's father in order to prevent the larve from hatching and killing them all.

Various Cousins

Brendan Lahey

Soundtrack

Bad Religion - I Love My Computer

All I need to do is click on you

And well be together for eternity

And no one is ever gonna take my love

From me because I've got security

Her password and a key

Bad Religion - Before You Die

Everybody is bastard: my world is like plaster

Crumbling apart from pressure of the blaster, waiting for a sign

And the momentary pleasures take their turn

As a wistful boy runs out of things to learn,

The episodes of yore are never to return.

Bad Religion - To Another Abyss

While the human masses and their vague conceptions

Obliterate each other with impunity

And you wonder, "What’s in this for me?"

Duncan Sheik - Genius

Clearly I’m a genius

If she only knew it

But somewhere in her radius

I really blew it

I know, I know what I said to her

And I know what I did

What I don’t know is how I could ever be

So incredibly stupid

Eve 6 - Inside Out

I would swallow my pride,

I would choke on the rhines,

But the lack thereof would leave me empty inside,

Swallow my doubt

Turn it inside out

Find nothing but faith in nothing.

Carbon Leaf - What About Everything?

Before time takes each year, like a knife cuts it clear

It's school, then work and then life that just sharpens the blade

I think about time for fun. I think about time for play

Then I think about being done, with no resume

With no one left to blame

What about fortune and fame?

What about your love to obtain?

What about the ring?

What about....

What about everything?

The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)

You know its kinda hard just to get along today

Our subject isn't cool, but he fakes it anyway

He may not have a clue, and he may not have style

But everything he lacks, well he makes up in denial.

Linda Geleris - Mr. Harper

Mr. Harper, your impossible eyes have taken in the treasures of the world.

Mr. Harper, all these elements collide inside your beautiful superlative mind.

Matchbox 20 - How Far We've Come

I'm waking up at the start of the end of the world,

But it's feeling just like every other morning before,

Now I wonder what my life is going to mean if it's gone,

The cars are moving like a half a mile an hour if that

And I started staring at the passengers who're waving goodbye

Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time?

Muse - Starlight

Far away

This ship is taking me far away

Far away from the memories

Of the people who care if I live or die

Starlight

I will be chasing the starlight

Until the end of my life

I don't know if it's worth it anymore

Dashboard Prophets - Ballad for Dead Friends

It's a cold day in a cruel world

I really wished I could have saved you

Then who would save me from myself?

Right now, well, I could use a stiff drink

To kill the pain that's deep inside my bones

The Pogues - The Body Of An American

But fifteen minutes later

We had our first taste of whiskey

There was uncles giving lectures

On ancient Irish history

The men all started telling jokes

And the women they got frisky

At five o'clock in the evening

Every bastard there was piskey

Fare thee well going away

There's nothing left to say

Farewell to New York City boys

To Boston and PA

He took them out

With a well-aimed clout

He was often heard to say

I'm a free born man of the USA
