Basics

Name: Tobias. Theoretically he has a last name, but he's not telling you.

Age: 19

Fandom: Animorphs

Species: ...complicated. He was born a human, but now he lives as a red-tailed hawk.

Brief History

There's one in every class - the quiet, awkward kid in the middle row, not quite geeky enough to sit in the front row with the smart kids, not cool enough for the back row with the jocks and the bullies. Artistic, in a shy sort of way, without ever managing to put himself forward. A dreamer. The sort of boy who looks out the window during class and dreams of being something more. Tobias never really fit in at school, and a home life spent shuffling from one coast to the other whenever his current guardian got tired of him meant he didn't make connections at school easily, either.

During high school, he met - and was saved from a pair of bullies by - Jake. Through that tenuous connection, he was with Jake, Jake's best friend Marco, cousin Rachel and Rachel's best friend Cassie when they were walking home from the mall and saw what they thought, at first, was a shooting star. Tobias was the first to see it - walking with his eyes on the skies, instead of really paying attention to the conversation - and they quickly realised that it wasn't a shooting star, but an alien spaceship.

In the abandoned construction site where the ship had crashed, the alien inside was dying. He told them about the Yeerks, aliens who had come to Earth to take it over. Not with giant spaceships and overt invasions - theirs was a far more insidious invasion. They got inside people's heads, the alien told the teenagers, and took them over. His people, the Andalites, fought the Yeerks, but it would be a long time, possibly years, before more Andalites could come to Earth. There was one last hope. Inside his ship was a blue cube, the Escafil device, and when the five kids touched it, they gained the ability to morph.

Any animal they could touch, the alien said. They would acquire the DNA and be able to literally become the animal. The biggest drawback to the morphing power was that it had a time restriction - stay in morph for over two hours, and you'd be stuck. And then he told them to leave him. They saw Visser Three, the leader of the invasion force, kill the Andalite prince, and they ran.

During a mission not too long afterwards, Tobias stayed in hawk morph for longer than two hours.

A short while after that, Tobias and Cassie started suffering from odd dreams, as though someone was calling out to them. Through these dreams and odd spells that happened while they were awake, the Animorphs discovered the Dome of the Andalite ship, deep beneath the ocean, and one survivor - Elfangor's younger brother, the cadet Aximili-Esgarrouth-Isthil, or Ax as they came to call him.

Throughout the course of the war, Tobias discovered that his father was none other than Elfangor, the dying Andalite prince who had given them the power to morph. He regained his ability to morph and was even able to acquire his human form, thanks to the time-manipulating abilities of the godlike being called the Ellimist. He and Rachel had a mutual attraction, but she never understood his reasons for staying a hawk when he could have stayed in human morph for two hours and remained human. His reasons were twofold; if he stayed human, he'd be out of the fight. And if he stayed human, he'd have to deal with his aunt and uncle and the life that he'd given up a little too happily.

When the Yeerks developed the Anti-Morphing Ray, with the intention of using it on the "Andalite bandits", Tobias volunteered to be captured and have the ray used on him. The reasoning behind this decision was that he would be in hawk form, and they'd expect him to demorph into an Andalite, but hawk form was his default form now - there would be no Andalite demorphing, and the Yeerks would assume that the ray had failed.

They didn't count on Taylor, the Controller who was in charge of interrogating Tobias, or the fact that she'd quite happily torture him. He survived, physically intact and emotionally a little the worse for wear, and the Yeerks assumed that the anti-morphing ray wouldn't work.

When some of the Animorphs were injured during a fight in a blood bank, their secret was out. They'd been operating with the Yeerks under the mistaken belief that the forces doing so much damage to them were Andalites who'd survived the battle that Elfangor had been killed in. Now that their cover was blown, the Animorphs and their families retreated to the valley where the free Hork-Bajir - aliens who were the Yeerks' shock troops - were living. And Tobias found his mother, Loren, who'd suffered severe injuries, blindness and amnesia in a car accident when he was young.

When Rachel died, something in Tobias died with her. He stayed with the Animorphs long enough for the war to be ended, and then he withdrew from humanity for three years, only rejoining Marco and Jake when they went on a mission to rescue Ax - a mission that would turn out to be a suicide run.

The last thing Tobias remembers is Jake ordering them to ram the Blade Ship, in an attempt to destroy the being who had destroyed Ax and could prove to be a greater threat to Earth than the Yeerks ever were. And then there was a bright light, the sensation of something tugging at him, and he was... somewhere else.

Bits and Pieces

(Things that are established as true in his original canon; things that may not have been established as true in his original canon, but are true for the purposes of the game.)

  • Tobias is fairly talented at drawing; his skill lies mostly with drawing from life.
  • His favourite morph, aside from the red-tailed hawk that is his preferred aerial form, is the dolphin. It's far, far easier to be happy as a dolphin.
  • He hates morphing insects and smaller creatures, and unless the situation really calls for it he refuses to acquire and morph a mouse.
  • In human form, he's gangly and a little underweight - neglect will do that to a growing boy, unfortunately - with floppy, dirty-blonde hair, dark eyes and long limbs.
  • His aunt was not, in general, physically abusive - he got knocked around a few times by her, but for the most part it was emotional abuse or neglect. His uncle, however, swung between neglect and physical abuse, and that combined with living as a hawk means touch makes him jumpy. Predator instincts plus bad experiences equal personal bubble that doesn't bear violating.
  • He doesn't consume sugar often, but when he does, it makes him CRAZY. Comes of not eating it for years.
